Maria Zappone

Maria Zappone teaches English at a secondary school near Vancouver, BC. She received her BA from the University of the Fraser Valley, followed by her BEd and her MA from Simon Fraser University. Zappone is interested in how literature can be used as a catalyst for classroom discussions of important topics such as the Black Lives Matter movement, racism, homophobia, and many others. She hopes to introduce, or perhaps reintroduce, other educators to Komunyakaa’s poetry, so that they can continue the conversation with their students.

Maria’s article, “How Dien Cai Dau and #BlackLivesMatter Restore Dignity to Victims,” appears in albeit 4.2: Black Lives Matter.
